Catalyst
Catalyst is a next-generation performance jumping saddle that leverages 3D-printing and 3D-scanning technologies for custom-fit solutions. As a lifelong equestrian, I identified the critical need for better saddle fitting in show jumping—a high-impact sport where ill-fitting equipment causes discomfort and communication breakdowns between horse and rider. Catalyst features an exposed carbon fiber lattice structure that is lightweight and shock-absorbent, while using rivets rather than synthetic adhesives for sustainable, easily-disassembled manufacturing. The project combines traditional artisan craftsmanship with cutting-edge technology to revolutionize equestrian equipment design.

Using LiDAR 3D scanning technology, each horse is digitally captured and brought into CAD software. The saddle's parametric lattice structure is then modeled specifically for that horse's curves, offering unprecedented precision compared to traditional hand-measuring methods.
Catalyst prioritizes sustainable manufacturing through minimal parts and rivet-based assembly rather than synthetic adhesives. This approach allows for easy disassembly, repair, and component replacement while maintaining the durability expected from high-performance equestrian equipment.
Catalyst is now on display at the Gulfstream Center for Design. Special thanks to the leather craftsmen who provided expertise in traditional techniques, our project sponsors, and all the support that made this innovation in equestrian design possible.
